A school zone beacon is a flashing amber light mounted with a School Speed Limit assembly (S4/S5 series) that activates only during designated school hours — arrival, dismissal, and where applicable, lunch periods. Because the beacon is dark outside school hours, drivers learn to associate the flash with an active school zone, which studies show improves speed compliance compared to static signage alone. The MUTCD regulates beacon operation, flash pattern, and timing. Solar-powered units are available for locations without access to electrical service.
Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons (RRFBs)
The Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacon is a pedestrian-activated warning device installed at unsignalized school crosswalks. When a student or crossing guard presses the activation button, the RRFB emits a high-intensity, irregular flash pattern specifically designed to attract driver attention — distinct from standard beacons and traffic signals so drivers recognize it as a pedestrian warning.
